An Immense Privilege

An important milestone for our Deacon James Smith, C.PP.S., as he presided for the first time at a baptism at St. Henry Church in St. Henry, Ohio. Welcome to the Church, Kyla Rose! Deacon James says that "it's wildly different, preaching on a Sunday in a parish with a couple hundred people in the pews to having the privilege of celebrating a sacrament with a small segment of an extended family at a baptism. I'm sure it was simply a good afternoon for Kyla, but I couldn't help but notice how many times in the ritual where I as the presider was speaking directly to Kyla that her eyes were intent upon me.
"It’s beautiful to include children into who we are as church. While of course Kyla couldn’t understand what we were saying, the sacrament was a demonstration for her of how to love and be loved, something even the youngest member of a family can know.
"It was a humbling experience to be included in that circle of parents, godparents, grandparents and other loved ones in something as profound as a baptism, especially when I have been a part of this parish community for only a month. Amidst the nerves and worries about my first time presiding at this sacrament, it was truly an immense privilege to be included in the circle of love surrounding Kyla into welcoming her into the Church."
Congratulations to Kyla Rose (who was wearing a baptismal gown that had been worn by as many as 50 family members before her), her parents, big sister and the whole family! May God bless you as you raise this little one to love and serve the Lord!
