The Day of Mercy previously scheduled for July 1, 2016, at Precious Blood Parish in Dayton has been rescheduled and will take place on Friday, October 21, 2016, the feast of St. Gaspar del Bufalo, founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.

Deacon James Smith, C.PP.S., was ordained on May 25, 2016. While studying advanced theology as part of his coursework at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Deacon Smith helped prepare seventh graders for their Confirmation.

On May 25, 2016, the Missionaries of the Precious Blood were pleased to ordained James Smith, C.PP.S., and Peter Tam Minh Hoang, C.PP.S., to the diaconate. The ordinations took place in the beautiful Assumption Chapel at St. Charles Center, motherhouse of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Check out the photos.

James Smith, C.PP.S., and Matt Keller, C.PP.S., were definitively incorporated as Missionaries of the Precious Blood on Monday, May 23, pledging their lives to service to God and the Church.

Fr. Frankline Rayappa, C.PP.S., met with members at St. Charles to discuss the culture and customs of his native country, India. Fr. Frankline is new to the U.S. and is currently in ministry at St. Edward Parish in Newark, Calif.

Sometimes it seems we confess the same sin over and over again. But a bishop preaching on mercy urges us all to keep trying and keep believing in the Father’s mercy and forgiveness.

Matthew Keller, C.PP.S., who will be definitively incorporated on Monday, May 23, during the opening night of the provincial assembly, invites all in the Precious Blood family to pray with him.

There are a couple of logistical problems, one being that he does not live in the same state, and the other being that he does not live in the same world.

But what began as a task that was mostly about the paperwork ultimately became another kind of journey, as Br. Antonio “Ton” Sison, C.PP.S., reflects on the dual citizenship that truly reflects who he is.

Fr. George “Yuri” Kuzara, C.PP.S., is in ministry at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue, Ohio. Having biritual faculties for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, he brings to the Community a unique view of Precious Blood spirituality, as seen through the lens of the Eastern Church.

Throughout the year our moderator general, Fr. Bill Nordenbrock, C.PP.S., and the C.PP.S. general council spend time meeting together in Rome to plan different events for the Congregation and taking care of much of the routine “behind the scenes” business of the community.

Fr. Joseph Deardorff, C.PP.S., is the director of the C.PP.S. mission ad experimentum in Colombia. A native of Dayton, he also ministered in Peru for many years.

On Ash Wednesday, Five Missionaries of the Precious Blood—Frs. Steve Dos Santos, Tim Knepper, George “Yuri” Kuzara, Jayababu Nuthulapati and Kevin Scalf—will be among those commissioned by Pope Francis as Missionaries of Mercy for the Jubilee Year. There are 800 from around the world to be commissioned on Ash Wednesday, 100 from the United States.

Cleveland native Br. Rob Reuter, C.PP.S., is a professor of philosophy at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind. Professed in 2003, he had the unique experience of going through religious formation as a college professor. Br. Rob has also been involved in the leadership of the Congregation.

Fr. Steven Joseph Lopes was ordained as the first bishop of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter on February 2. Bishop Lopes said he was nurtured in his faith by Fr. Marvin Steffes, C.PP.S.

Fr. Norbert Adelman, C.PP.S., died on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio. Fr. Adelman, who was 94, had been in failing health.

Fr. Bill Nordenbrock, C.PP.S., our moderator general, asks us to listen closely to the Gospel message during the Holy Thursday Mass tonight, in which Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. “This is not normal behavior. If you come to my house for dinner, I’m not going to wash your feet,” Fr. Bill said.

Since the fire, which investigators suspect was started by an unknown person or persons early on Sunday, February 7, Missionaries in Purranque have been meeting with civil authorities, investigators and representatives from their insurance company in an attempt to learn the cause of the fire and come up with a plan to recover from it.

Fr. John Falter, C.PP.S., died on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at St. Charles Center, Celina, Ohio. Fr. Falter was 82 years old.

Fr. Albert Reed, C.PP.S., 87, died at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio. He had been in failing health.

“History is written by the victors,” goes an oft-quoted maxim. In the case of the history of our Congregation, history has been written by the ordained. Most members can name at least a few of the pioneering priests of the C.PP.S., but how many can name a brother from those early years?

St. Paul, St. Francis, St. Augustine: some saints get plenty of press. But others, while more obscure in our worldwide Church, have amazing stories as well. Fr. Steve Dos Santos, C.PP.S., urges us to learn a little more about little-known saints.

Fr. David Kelly, C.PP.S., was honored in October for his ministry with the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation in Chicago.

Saint Joseph's College, which is sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, inaugurated it's 18th president, Dr. Robert A. Pastoor, during a week that showcased the many talents of students, faculty and alumni of the college.

One of our candidates, Greg Evers, wrote recently in the C.PP.S. Cincinnati Newsletter about his experiences on the C.PP.S. pilgrimage to Rome this summer. Greg said that the place that touched him the most was the Church of St. Maria in Trivio in Rome, which holds the tomb of our founder, St. Gaspar del Bufalo.

Fr. Emil Schuwey, C.PP.S., died at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center, Celina, Ohio. Fr. Schuwey, who was 93, had been in failing health.

We’re happy to announce that the Mass that was celebrated during the Precious Blood Bicentennial is now available for viewing on the Missionaries’ YouTube channel. Archbishop Dennis Schnurr of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati presided at the Mass, held on August 15, 2015, at St. Charles Center.

Fr. Larry J. Wyen, C.PP.S, age 73, of Briarwood Village, Coldwater, Ohio and formerly of Minster, Ohio died Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital, Ft. Wayne.

In honor of our bicentennial year, the Missionaries of the Precious Blood are doubling the funding for Fr. Brunner peace and justice grants for 2015-2016.

Fr. Henry Frantz, C.PP.S., died on Monday, April 13, 2015, at Lima Memorial Hospital. He was 87. Fr. Frantz was in parish ministry for much of his life as a priest. He is survived by his identical twin brother, Br. Gregory Frantz, C.PP.S.

Diego Gallardo, C.PP.S., was definitively incorporated during a liturgy in Valdivia, Chile, on January 27.

St. Gaspar del Bufalo, who founded the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in 1815, had strong food preferences for himself. But he also believed in keeping his Missionaries well fed, so they would have strength for their ministries.

Fr. Leon Flaherty, C.PP.S., will receive a special award from the Diocese of Superior, Wisc., at a ceremony on May 22 at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
