Peru is a country of contrasts. It varies from tropical in the east to dry desert in the west; it is balmy in its jungle lowlands and frigid high in the Andes.
The Missionaries of the Precious Blood serve on both ends of the Peruvian spectrum: high in the mountains in the mining town of La Oroya, and in crowded capital city of Lima.

In Lima, Missionaries staff two large
parishes,
Nuestra Senora de la Luz
(Our Lady of the
Light)
and San
Francisco de Borja. At Nuestra
Senora
de la Luz, the parish offers many services
to its
people, including a pharmacy,
prenatal care,
mental health counseling
and computer classes.
The parish of San
Francisco de Borja administers
a school
for 1,000 students, and offers night
classes for local girls who work as
domestics
during the day.
Missionaries in Peru also founded the San
Jeronimo Association,
which promotes the ongoing education of the country’s teachers.
La Oroya is high in the Andes, a city built along a steep mountain road. Homes are built into the side of the mountain. The missionaries there minister to families that work in the mines, or in small businesses supporting mining operations. The parish operates a senior citizens center with a meal program, and meets the needs of the people in many other ways.
