Seven Characteristics of a
Precious Blood Parish

There are seven characteristics that define life in a Precious Blood parish, according to Fr. Jeff Keyes, C.PP.S., the pastor of St. Edward Church of Newark, CA. Fr. Jeff listed these characteristics as faithful to the spirit of St. Gaspar del Bufalo, the founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood:

A Precious Blood parish is collaborative.  The leadership takes a team approach among the laity, priests, sisters, brothers and deacons. St. Gaspar never thought of himself as working alone, Fr. Keyes said.  “In advising his missionaries, he would always remind us not to trust in our own thinking alone, but to work together with others for the common good,” he said.

A Precious Blood parish is all-embracing This principle stretches everyone involved in parish life, he said.  “Our spirituality is supposed to stretch us as we are seeking to broaden the world by our preaching and our presence,” he said.

A Precious Blood parish is generous.  “We are talking about a generosity without measure, beyond our imagination,” he said.  “Since God has been unreasonably generous with us, it is imperative that we witness some of that generosity for the world.”

A Precious Blood parish encourages prayer.  “Prayer places us in solidarity with a broken world,” he said.

A Precious Blood parish is contemplative.  “We live in a world that is filled with individualism, becoming increasingly militaristic, and gradually more and more exclusive. . .  We do not need to imitate the world in its desire to gain power,” he said.  “We can simply learn to hold the world in God’s embrace of the powerlessness of the cross.”

A Precious Blood parish has a missionary spirit.  “When we become parochial, we lose our identity as missionary,” Fr. Keyes said.  It is important to continue the quest to include the world in the light of Christ.

A Precious Blood parish is explicit in its identity.  His parish carried out its work for the poor, the hurt, the sick and the dying under the banner of the Blood of Christ.  “Who will speak if we don’t?” he said.  “This isn’t just my voice.  It is the voice of Jesus calling out for all people.”
