A Shining Face

Albert Einstein was a theoretical physicist and developed the theory of relatively. Relatively speaking, few of us could explain either his job or his theory. But he is widely known as a brilliant, creative thinker.

What you may not know about him is that he was also considered to be photogenic. His distinctive features and crown of unconquered hair made him stand out in photos as in life.

We all have someone like that in our family—not an Einstein, but someone who is photogenic. In a group picture, they stand out. It may be because of their looks but could also be that they embrace the idea of being photographed. They turn to the camera, eyes wide open, with a bright smile.

We could call that a shining face—and it is what God turns toward us in this new year. An open face, a face that is interested in us, delighted by us, and wants us to delight in the mutual connection between us and God.

We see it in the blessing that the Lord offers to the Israelites through Moses and Aaron we hear in the First Reading on January 1:
The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon
you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and
give you peace! (Numbers 6: 24-26).

We offer that prayer to you and your family as the new year begins. May the events of the coming year convince you, if you still need proof, that you are a beloved child of God, and that God smiles on you. May we all smile back.

When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, changed who can see it or it's been deleted.
