Dear Friends,

During the bicentennial pilgrimage to Italy in July, I was blessed to visit the places that were significant in the life of our founder, St. Gaspar. I followed in Gaspar’s footsteps along with over 700 pilgrims from 17 of the countries where the Missionaries serve.

On the fifth day of the pilgrimage, we went as a group to San Felice Abbey in the small town of Giano, in the hills of Umbria. We stood in the center of the courtyard, the same courtyard where Gaspar had walked and dreamed and prayed with those first few Missionaries.

In the center of the courtyard is a well that has become a sort of symbol to the C.PP.S. in our time. Just as St. Gaspar went to that well to quench his thirst when he was worn out, we go there for spiritual renewal, to be refreshed by the spirit of our founder and the Word of God.  We draw energy from each other and our prayer.  It is a sacred space from which we draw strength.  Then, renewed and refreshed, we go back into the world as Missionaries—just as St. Gaspar told us to do.

Maybe to Gaspar, the well was just a well. He had a passion for preaching, for prayer and for ministry. He was setting out to save the world with only three other Missionaries by his side. Probably, he didn’t have time to gaze at the well and think, 200 years from now, people from all around the world will come here to the abbey and look at the well as a door into our history.

Whether he valued it or ignored it, the well remains. It stands as a witness to 200 years of Missionaries of the Precious Blood being refreshed in that courtyard. From the abbey in Giano, Missionaries have gone out to countries that Gaspar, who never left Italy himself, could hardly have imagined. The thoughts and prayers and dreams and visions that came to Gaspar while he recharged himself at the well have flowed through the years, all the way to you and me. We carry them forward.

We’ve accomplished a lot in 200 years. Our Missionaries worldwide have served millions of people, bringing the healing power of the Blood of Jesus to generations of God’s children. We have not done this on our own. As we look back all the way to the well at Giano, we can see the hand of God helping us, moving us, clearing a path for us.

That well runs deep. There is a never ending supply of spiritual water in the well of the writings of St. Gaspar and in the bonds of our community. We enter the third century of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood with the same passion and conviction that St. Gaspar modeled for us. He set the example; it’s up to each of us to carry the dream forward, each in his or her unique way. The Precious Blood of Jesus continues to flow through us, in us and from us, to every corner of the earth. That’s what our bicentennial is all about. That’s why we sing and celebrate.

I hope that we all enjoy this bicentennial year, with the most wonderful celebrations our Community has ever put together. I hope we take a deep drink of that joy and gratitude. And then we must go back out into the world, and proclaim the Precious Blood of Jesus for a new generation.

Sincerely,

Spanish Text:

Queridos Amigos,

Atentamente,
V. Rev. Larry J. Hemmelgarn, C.PP.S.
