A message for the Solemnity of St. Gaspar del Bufalo from our Provincial Director Fr. Jeffrey Kirch, C.PP.S.
A fellow Missionary of the Precious Blood reminded me last week that “We live in interesting times.” His statement is a version of the apocryphal Chinese proverb, “May you live in interesting times.” Interesting times can often be chaotic and hectic. I am sure that you, like me, would prefer the hum-drum regular days over hectic and chaotic.
St. Gaspar did live in interesting times. From the Napoleonic wars, through his exile and the founding of the Congregation, to his death in a cholera epidemic, Gaspar lived a whirlwind of a life. Despite the maelstrom around him, he maintained his composure and never lost sight of what was most important: his faith in God.
In a letter to Fr. Orazio Bracaglia in 1836, St. Gaspar wrote, “Have no doubts, everything will be put in order. Prayer and patience, and a discreet amount of time. But, I repeat, everything will be worked out.” In the end, God will triumph.
So, on this Solemnity of St. Gaspar, a time when our lives may be caught up in the chaos of the world, we remember the words of Gaspar. Prayer and patience. Everything will be worked out.

La semana pasada un compañero Misionero de la Preciosa Sangre me hizo recordar que “Vivimos en tiempos interesantes.” Este dicho es una versión del proverbio chino apócrifo, “Ojalá vivas en tiempos interesantes.” Tiempos interesantes pueden ser caóticos y agitados. Estoy seguro que ustedes, como yo, preferirían aquellos días rutinarios sobre los agitados y caóticos.
San Gaspar sí vivió en tiempos interesantes. Desde las guerras Napoleónicas, pasando por el exilio y la fundación de la Congregación, hasta su muerte en la epidemia de colera, Gaspar vivió una vida como de torbellino. A pesar de la vorágine que le rodeó, el mantuvo su compostura y nunca perdió de vista lo que era los mas importante: su fe en Dios.
En una carta a P. Orazio Bracaglia en 1836, San Gaspar escribió, “No tengas dudas, todo se pondrá en orden. Oración y paciencia, y un tiempo prudente. Pero, repito, todo se va a arreglar.” Al final, Dios triunfará.
Entonces, en esta Solemnidad de San Gaspar, un tiempo en que nuestras vidas pueden envolverse en el caos del mundo, recordamos las palabras de Gaspar. Oración y paciencia. Todo se va a arreglar.
